Wed. 30 May. 2007  Today is the 1187th day on Billy's transplant calendar.
**1,713 day's living in the "World of Cancer".

Today's Blood counts: WBC@ 9.2, RBC@ 4.90, Hemoglobin@ 15.5, platelets@ 192,000, ANC@ 4,800.
Billy had a 'follow-up' check-up with his Hem/Onc team this afternoon, and all went very well. Some of his count's are in the 'high normal' range, but Dr. Grana see's absolutely no concern. Dr. Grana did notice a slight curve in Billy's spine, and could attribute it to the fact that Billy's right leg is shorter than his left by over 1 1/2 cm. She will contact Dr. Letson (Billy's surgeon) and request that he schedule Billy for a lengthening ASAP. Billy has grown 1 1/2 cm since his visit last month, and it really shows. The surgery will have to wait until Billy returns from camp though, as he is really looking forward to going (june 13-20). Billy also visited the Clinic to have inhalant allergy skin testing done. He was 'stuck' a couple dozen time's (percutaneus and intradermal)with a number of allergens, and he is a bit less allergic to his cat, but more allergic to Oak pollen............go figure! He will continue with his eye drops, and a prescription antihistamine (as needed).

School is out for the summer as of May 18th, and we are Proud to say that Billy will be returning to High School on August 21st as a Sophomore!!

We would like to invite everyone of you to follow us, as we turn another page on Billy's Journey through the "World of cancer", by joining us in our Forum. There, you'll have a direct interaction with with My Family, and everyone else associated with Billy over the past 5 years. I "BEG" you all to join us there, as I too will be turning a page in the "World of cancer". I will be ending Billy's Page, as we've all come to know it, with this entry. Billy's Page will still be left in it's entirety, and I will update it "ONLY" if Billy's condition take's a turn for the worse. Our Forum has been active for a few months now, and is growing daily. I have put alot of work into it, and you'll find many topic's to take part in, other than the topic of Childhood cancer. I am in complete control of this Forum, as it is hosted on my web server, and authored, administered, and moderated by me; and a select few people that have been with us from 'Day one'. You'll be able to interact with other Forum Members, as well as Billy himself; and talk about anything and everything. PLEASE take a few minutes and visit the Forum, sign up, and turn the page with us. The process is simple, and quite fun!! You'll have complete access to Our Forum only if you join, and will be left in the dark if you don't. Please know, that this Forum is open to each and every one of you, and can only be accessed if, and when you register. We don't want anyone to miss out on this oportunity to continue this Journey, and can't see why you wouldn't *wink*, so PLEASE register as soon as you possibly can by CLICKING HERE!. If you, for what ever reason, chose not to continue this Journey with us; We want you to know that we could not have made it without you, and we thank you for all that you've done over these past 5 years. We Love you, and will never forget you.

Thur. 26 Apr. 2007  Today is the 1153th day on Billy's transplant calendar.
**1,679 day's living in the "World of Cancer".

2007 Letter in academics Billy's visit's to the Dr's this week have been un-eventful. Billy continue's to use the nebulizer daily to help clear the cough he has had, as well as taking daily anti-biotics. Billy continue's to feel well.

Billy received (as you can see to the left) "letter in Academic Achievement" for his Freshmen Year of High School. Billy has certainly made an impression on the School Faculty this year, and he also received a couple Certificate's of Recognition. You can CLICK HERE and have a look! Pretty cool, huh!! We have always wondered what's in store for Billy in the future, maybe this is a "hint" as to what we have to look forward to!!

Please Pray for Billy........................and EVERY Child of Cancer.

Wed. 18 Apr. 2007  Today is the 1145th day on Billy's transplant calendar.

Happy Birthday Billy
Thank you ALL, for the wonderful cards and Gift's sent to Billy for his 15th Birthday. Billy sends his Love, and sincere appreciation to everyone of you who have stood by him through the past 55 months. He is so very happy to be able to share his 15th Birthday with each of you.

Please Pray for Billy........................and EVERY Child of Cancer.

Tue. 10 Apr. 2007  Today is the 1137th day on Billy's transplant calendar.
**1,663 day's living in the "World of Cancer".

Today's Blood counts: WBC@ 10.4, RBC@ 4.43, Hemoglobin@ 14.0, platelets@ 228,000, ANC@ 6,000.
Billy had a 'follow-up' check-up with his Hem/Onc team this afternoon, and Dr. Barbosa feels all is well. Beside's the CBC's, Billy gave up 5 tube's of blood for more testing, as well as an x-ray of his hand to monitor his growth. Billy has been feeling GREAT, his voice is changing, he started shaving, he has grown almost 3 inch's this year (since his last Birthday 4-18-2006), he has begun to set goals for himself, he has become more focused on his "FUTURE", and he has truly begun to distance himself from the "World of Cancer". Billy took a walk up to 2 southwest after the tests, and some of the Staff, who haven't seen Billy is quite a while, wondered who this strange young man was walking the halls of the Children's cancer ward. That was until Alicia came around the corner, and they put 2 and 2 together!! BILLY?..........they said!! They just couldn't believe their eye's!! It is so very rewarding for these Nurse's to see something "GOOD" in the "World of Childhood cancer".

Please Pray for Billy........................and EVERY Child of Cancer.

Mon. 12 Mar. 2007  Today is the 1107th day on Billy's transplant calendar.
**1,633 day's living in the "World of Cancer".

Today's Blood counts: WBC@ 9.9, RBC@ 4.68, Hemoglobin@ 14.5, platelets@ 216,000, ANC@ 5,400.
Billy had a 'routine' check-up with his Hem/Onc team this afternoon, and everyone in the Hospital was so excited to see Billy. Billy's counts look Great, although his WBC is a bit elevated. Dr. Petrovic, and Dr. Grana had commented on "swollen Lymph nodes" on the left side of Billy's neck, and we will monitor them over the next week. Billy had acquired a few allergies after his BMT, and this could be the cause of the swollen lymph nodes. The allergy season is in full gear here in Florida. Quite a few tube's of blood were taken, and a full battery of tests will be done, as usual; so we'll be in the "wait and see" mode for a few weeks again *wink*.
Billy has also visited his endocrinologist last Friday, and she too, is pleased at Billy's progress. Billy is well into "puberty", and has even grown 3 full inches in height over the past 9 month's. Billy will have his hand's x-rayed in the next few day's to check the growth plate's. This will pin-point Billy's growth progress. We all know how detrimental the effects of the Chemo drugs have been on Billy's growth; well, Billy seems to be "catching up" now!!

Please Pray for Billy........................and EVERY Child of Cancer.

In Loving Memory
MARK HENRY DESMARAIS
July 3, 1997 - February 16, 2007

I'd like the Memory of me to be a Happy one,
I'd like to leave an afterglow of smile's when the day is gone.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy time's, and laughing time's, and bright and sunny day's.
I'd like the tear's of those who grieve to dry before the sun,
Of happy memories that I leave when Life is done.

The above verse was taken from the memorial card given out at Mark's wake (viewing) this afternoon. As Alicia and I knelt beside the coffin that cradled Mark ever so softly, we shed a tear for the body before us, and Prayed for his soul that now surrounds us. Mark is at peace now, he has been cured; and will live forever in the hearts of all who knew him. Sleep well Mark, we Love you.

Please Pray for Billy........................and EVERY Child of Cancer.

Tue. 30 Jan. 2007  Today is the 1064th day on Billy's transplant calendar.
**1,591 day's living in the "World of Cancer".

Welcome back to Billy's Page, we hope this update finds you all well.
We received a call from Billy's Hem/Onc team at ACH this morning regarding the CT scans done yesterday, and we are very much relieved to say that the scans of Billy's Chest, Abdomen, and Pelvis are 'CLEAR' *wink*. The 'lesions' on Billy's liver are still there (as expected), and have not changed in size or appearance. They will 'probably' dissolve over time.

We stopped in at PICU to see Mark and his Family, before we left, but as expected, everyone was asleep. They've been spending some very long days, and night's there since Mark was moved to ICU. Please visit his web site, and leave a message of 'Hope' for him and his Family. They truly need your Prayer's.

Please Pray for Billy........................and EVERY Child of Cancer

The above 'statistics' compiled by Jay Cridlin. Source: the ACS, CA: A cancer Journal For Clinicians
Now...........I am 'probably' wrong, but, does the fact that they once again FORGOT to include Our Children mean that none will die this year from their own form's of cancer? or, did they once again just neglect to include our Children in their one sided statistics? This make's me sick to my stomach, I can hardly keep my composure. How many Children in Florida have any number of Pediatric cancer(s)? How many Children in Florida, California, or any other State in this Country are going to die from their form of cancer, in 2007? Why are the Children ALWAYS left out of the so called "Quality of Life Index"? Ask the Parent of a Child of Cancer how the 'Quality of Life' has been, and while you're at it....................ask the Child.

Below is a letter we wrote to the Editor of our local newspaper (St. Pete. Times), that featured the above article:
concerned,
As the Parents of a "Child with Cancer", We are sickened each time there is something posted in print, and or TV about every possible cancer known to man, and statistics of each; EXCEPT the very cancer that will take the live's of Our most important resource, "our Children". We are appalled at the fact that not a single word is mentioned about how many Children in Florida (or the Country) are going to die from Pediatric cancer(s), not to mention the number of Children who even have cancer. Our Son Billy, now 14 years old, and a Freshman in St. Pete. High School, has battled cancer twice in the almost 5 years since his diagnosis in 2002, and he is one of the very few Children that will probably survive this terrible disease. Why is it that not a word was mentioned in today's paper about Our Children with cancer, when statistics place Florida at number's 7, 7, and 2 for Breast, Colon, and prostate cancers survival rates (respectively)? Why is it that you don't see TV commercials about Childhood cancers? Where is Pediatric cancer ranked? To the Parents of a Child with Cancer, it is ranked #1. It was estimated that 106,560 new cancer case's are expected in Florida in 2007, how many are Children? There is an estimated 40,430 cancer deaths expected in Florida in 2007, how many are Children? Don't our Children matter to the 'statisticians?' It make's me sick to my stomach to see our Children un-accounted for in any, and every article printed on the topic of cancer. I can assure you all that every single bed in 2 southwest at All Children's Hospital is full of Children with cancer, and as soon as one bed becomes available, it will be filled with another Child of cancer. The very sad fact will be, that the bed became available because the previous occupant has died from his (her) disease, and this precious Child will be left out of the "Quality of Life Index". Ask the parents of this Child how the Quality of their Life has been while their Child fought for it's own "Quality of Life". "Childhood cancer is Real" people, open you eye's.
Thank you,
Alicia and Bill Gowacki
Parents of a 'Child of cancer'
